Making a Hemp Necklace
Knitting a necklace from hemp is indeed tricky. First you need to conceptualize the entire process in your mind and then perform it accordingly. The necklace gets completed with progression of knots.
You can also add beads, stones, charms and pendants to the necklace to make it more appealing. You have to remain patient enough to make the knots and progress in the right manner. Follow the steps explained further.
Purchase a large size hemp roll so that you do not fall short of material while making the necklace. Hemp twines come in variety of thickness and you can purchase as per your own choice. Decide the length of the necklace and take the measurement of the thread accordingly.
The thumb rule is, the length of the thread should be three times the length of the necklace. If your choker or necklace is ten inches long, then the hemp twine would be as long as thirty inches.
Arrange all the materials required for your necklace. Two metal clasps and cord tips will also be required for the purpose of locking both ends of the necklace after wearing.
There will be 2 main knots in the necklace. The knots will be formed separately at the left and right end of the twine. Take 4 strands of thread of equal length to make the knots.
First form a loop (overhand knot) with two threads around both the ends. These two twines will act as the base, which will further support the knots. Start forming the knots at the left end of the necklace.
Form a knot around the loop with the remaining two strands. This completes your first knot. Make the second knot with the free end of the same thread. This completes the basic structure of the necklace.
Continue forming the knots till you reach the other end of the necklace. Always pull the thread strongly after knotting it. The necklace might dismantle if the knots are loose.
If you want to jazz up the necklace with charms, precious and semi precious stones, wooden, rock and glass beads, then you have to insert them individually while creating the knots. So how do you embed beads in your hemp necklace.
The beads will be inserted into the twines that has formed the support for the knots. Open the loop slowly and pass the beads through it. Keep adding the beads from the free end of the supportive twine, followed by making the knots.
It's important to note that you cannot add the beads after completing the necklace. The process of embedding beads and knots should be simultaneous. Similarly you can also add a pendant after at the center of the necklace.
The last step is attaching a clasp to the necklace. There are numerous patterns of necklace clasps available in the market. Closed metallic clasps are ideal for a hemp necklace as they add a finishing touch to the necklace.
Barrel clasps, spring ring, lobster claw, hook and lock are also convenient for use. Ensure that the clasp has been secured tightly and it doesn't come out after wearing. Your braided hemp necklace is now ready.
