Hobbies for women over 50. Are they tough to come up with? Not at all. I just have to look at my mom and her busy schedule and I can come up with a million things in a second. Let me ask you something – when you think of ’50’, do you immediately think old? I don’t think so. 50 is no longer one of the ‘old’ ages. Think of it this way, do you feel your age? Do you feel like you’re 20, 30 or 40 something just because they say you are? Do you let anyone define how you should feel? No. Right? Well, then I’m not making an exception in this case either. Just because the age factor has been specified, in no way does it mean that the hobbies have to dwindle. Far from it, in fact.
To prove this theory right, the following article will give you some great ideas for hobbies (both, indoors and outdoors) that women can take up. And if you think they aren’t age appropriate, then I suggest you let the 50 year olds decide what they can and can’t take up from this list.
Hobbies for Older Women
I sincerely hope that you do not let age come in the way of pursuing any of these hobbies and interests. Some of these hobbies might seem like they are a stretch to the age factor, but I’ve only given examples of hobbies for women that I know have been pursued by women much over 50.
Book Club
Join a book club. And you know age is not a factor for this one. It could be a private club or you could take the initiative and form one with your closest friends or neighbors. This is a great way to give an outlet to the voracious reader in you and it doesn’t really cost as much. But yes, it does require planning. Which is quite piddly when compared to the amount of books you’ll have access to.
Swimming
Always wanted to try swimming and never could? What’s stopping you now? I know a lady who not only started swimming lessons at 60, but also swum across a river with her swim team. Plus she wasn’t even fit to begin with, but by keeping at the swimming bit, she got fitter and her confidence soared. All I say is, give it a try and who knows, maybe you’ll love it too.
Swimming is an all-encompassing activity that includes fun and sports. It is an exercise that works every inch of the body and helps in toning it as well as in promoting the working of all body functions. Great news all the way through.
Arts and Design
Arts offers so much. You could get into a whole list of hobbies in this one – pottery, sculpting, making clay models, making models of paper mache or designing lampsfor a boutique. If you have talent and a genuine interest in these forms, you’ll enjoy carrying through these creative hobbies at home as well, as opposed to joining a class. Plus, if you’re really good, not only will it be a good way to pass the time, but also a great way to make some money on the side. Win-win.
Take a Course
Take up a course (any course) as a hobby. It could be a study course, like learning a new language, or a subject in English (a paper on poetry or contemporary literature, perhaps) or anything that interests you. If studies do not interest you then hobby classes likecookery classes or aerobics are also great ideas for hobbies.
Join an NGO
If you believe in the cause of doing good for the society and want to work in that direction, then you can join an NGO (Non-government Organization), or a charity organization. These organizations organize several activities that are targeted towards the general good of society. These include food drives, clothes drives and more.
Find an NGO that focuses on a cause that you feel strongly about, like saving the environment, helping the poor or helping in imparting education. The feel-good factor is not easily duplicated by many other activities.
Gardening
Few activities are able to duplicate the joy that gardening as an activity brings. It is an activity that offers several things all at once. Try gardening and dabble in landscaping, or experiment with making a flower or vegetable garden. Other than that, it also offers you the chance to be close to nature and experience profound peace of mind. Plus, imagine the joy when you see all your efforts paying fruit like thus. One of the best feelings, no doubt.
Babysitting
If you love hanging out with kids and have a knack for taking care of them, you’ll absolutely love this hobby. No doubt it’ll require a little planning to start out, but it’ll be worth it. It’s not really necessary that you start a day care center or something similar, even taking care of a single kid to help out your neighbors or family is good too. Plus the money that you earn on the side is an added perk.
Cooking
Yes, we are aware that you know cooking and are a great cook, no doubt. We are not talking about the food that you cook on a daily basis, we are in fact talking about learning exotic and varied dishes. Like world cuisine, or maybe different kinds of cakes and cookies or anything else that you might be interested in learning. There are several cooking classes that are offered, all you have to do is contact them and get yourself into a class. You will enjoy every moment of it.
Dancing
The thing about dancing is that it is one of the most exhilarating activities. It is literally all-encompassing. It allows you the freedom to express yourself through movement, acts as a great release, doubles up as a great workout and is a great art to learn. Plus with the varied dancing forms and styles that there are in this world, there is never a dearth of things that you can learn.
Hiking
Nature-lover? Why not try hiking? It’s a great way to get close to nature, appreciate its beauty in its full glory and make some great friends as well. That is of course if you decide to go on a hike with a hiking group rather than by yourself. There are several options available in this activity and can be utilized according to what you’re comfortable with.
You could choose an all-day hike or an overnight hike, or you might want to choose a trail that is less strenuous. It’s a great change and one that rejuvenates a person like nothing much else.
Horseback Riding
This one should be reserved for the really fit, really-interested-in-the-activity kind of women in their 50s. It is not an activity that can be taken up by just about anyone, because it does require a certain level of fitness. If you fulfill all the criteria though, it is a truly fun activity to take up.
Not merely focusing on the fun aspect though, there are several other things that it offers as well. It teaches you how to focus and helps you develop expertise, like any sport would. But most importantly, riding a horse and learning how to control it has got to be one of the most exhilarating feelings in the world.
Kayaking
Kayaking is another activity which is a favorite among those who love adventure sports. Using a kayak (akin to a boat) and rows to cross over a water body is the crux of this activity. Quite naturally then, it comes with a whole lot of excitement and provides for a great adrenaline rush every time you get into the water.
There are several categories in these as well like kayaking in the rapids, for example. The level of difficulty that you want to choose and make it work, depends on your health and grit.
Movie Club
Movie buff? How perfect is the idea of starting or joining a movie club? Truly perfect. Plus you don’t really need much to get it started any which way. Gather about a few friends, neighbors or just about anyone and plan a schedule. Watch movies ranging over different genres and have discussions on the same, maybe.
There’s a lot you can do with a movie club, really. You could host special themes like a horror week or a war movie week and make it more interesting. Or you could perhaps find the books that some of the movies are based on and have discussions based on the same?
Playing Cards
Playing cards is truly one of the best ways to pass one’s time. We aren’t talking about going to casinos and splurging your money there. No. We are talking about the card games that you can play with your friends or grandchildren, sitting comfortably in the patio. It’s not just that these games are fun, it’s also that they help keep your mind active, giving it the exercise it requires.
Yoga
It is not merely essential that we keep ourselves physically fit at this age, but also mentally fit. Yoga helps in doing both. It improves the quality of life and helps to bring about a calming effect in life. There are a number of breathing techniques and poses that help in improving the flexibility in the body as well as flush out all the toxins from the body. Great way to stay fit, this is one activity that you’ll be investing your time wisely for.
Knitting
If you’ve never dabbled in knitting, now is a great time to start and explore this art. It might seem tough at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll realize that it is one of those activities which is not only highly creative but is also a great way to relax. It’s a great way to fill your time.
Women who are into knitting have said that it becomes a very addictive activity and many will often sit with the same while they are watching TV or doing something else. Adding to that, it gives a great sense of accomplishment at having created great pieces.
Those right there were some good hobbies for women over 50 that I could think of. But you don’t let it stop just here. Think of whatever you enjoy, and then go for it. And please, do not even let the age factor come into the picture. But most importantly, have fun.
